Reiki
Energy medicine, defined as any therapy working on the human body’s energetic biofield or aura, has a powerful ripple effect on emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health. Reiki, a gentle Japanese energy healing modality, fits this description.
The word Reiki combines rei (divine energy) and ki (personal energy), describing a transfer of healing energy from our trained practitioner to the person in need of healing, typically via the laying-on of hands.
Reiki is gaining rapid acceptance. The evidence base is growing: the largest prospective reiki study to date, conducted at Harvard University, showed statistically significant positive outcomes across multiple measures of psychological and physical health. Improvements were noted in pain, anxiety, depression, and overall wellbeing after even a single session.
Other rigorous studies have shown moderate to strong evidence of reiki’s viability, particularly for preoperative relaxation and postoperative pain, as well as for managing stress and improving cognition. Additional studies, have shown that genuine reiki significantly reduces stress responses, lowers heart rate, and decreases diastolic blood pressure.
Given the evidence of reiki’s effectiveness in managing pain and anxiety, and its gentle, cost-effective nature, Reiki is a valuable therapy for a myriad of conditions.
