The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has demanded a tax on high-sugar drinks and shown support for an increase in alcohol prices.
AMA president Dr Omar Khorshid said the group would call for a 20 per cent tax on high-sugar beverages in a bid to cut "skyrocketing" rates of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. He said the tax received widespread support in the community, and also flagged his support for increased alcohol prices, either via higher volumetric taxes or an increased in floor price.
